CA$H Results

Since it began in 2007, the CA$H Coalition has brought $131.2 million in tax refunds and credits back to individuals and the Greater Capital Region economy. During the 2015-16 Tax Year:

  • 12,200+ federal and state tax returns were prepared by 242 IRS-certified volunteers through the CA$H Coalition's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program across eight counties (Albany, Columbia, Greene, Hamilton, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady and Schoharie).
  • About $19.8 million was recovered in refunds and credits to working families to be used for reinvestment in the Capital Region economy.
  • More than $2.6 million was saved by Greater Capital Region taxpayers by using free tax preparation services offered by CA$H as an alternative to other tax preparation services (approximately $250 per return).

What is VITA?

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) provides free tax preparation and helps working families access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and many other credits and savings to which they are entitled under law. There are free VITA sites in each county throughout the Greater Capital Region. They are staffed by volunteers representing United Way, the finance industry, the IRS, social services and community members.

United Way's Role

As fiduciary of CA$H of the Greater Capital Region, is to help individuals and families achieve financial stability as one of the building blocks for a good quality of life and strong community.
